Tell us about the environment in which you will be a first aider. The activities, layout, working hours and people on site provide useful context for the discussion. An office team, a workshop and staff moving between locations may have different questions even when they are considering the same qualification route.
If your employer has already identified a training requirement, share the relevant course title and explain whether you are new to the role. Where you are comparing First Aid at Work with another course, ask about suitability against that requirement rather than choosing only on the basis of convenience or the next available date.
Existing first aiders should have their certificate details available when enquiring, including the qualification title and completion date. Explain whether you are looking to renew an existing qualification or start a different training route. This helps the conversation focus on the booking you actually need instead of relying on a broad request for a refresher.
If your organisation is arranging training for several colleagues, check each person's position separately. Different completion dates or previous courses may mean that the group needs more than one route. Ask which details are required to confirm suitability and make sure the person organising the booking passes the relevant information to each learner.
This course includes practical assessment, so read the participation information above and ask about anything you are unsure of. Discuss access, language or adjustment needs before confirming a place. Early questions give you a clearer understanding of what the proposed course involves and which arrangements can be considered for your circumstances.
Ask what clothing, materials or other preparation are appropriate, and confirm the timetable and venue. If work shifts affect your availability, explain that while discussing dates. Avoid making assumptions about attendance or assessment arrangements from an earlier course; use the confirmed information for the particular booking you are considering.
Before attending, consider the questions you have about your workplace role and how colleagues request help. You can note these without including medical information about individuals. General questions about communication and responsibilities are a useful starting point for understanding how training relates to the setting in which you work.
After training, speak with the person responsible for first aid arrangements at your workplace about applying your learning within local procedures. Keep your course information with your training records and identify any remaining questions. A qualification and a workplace's own arrangements need to be understood together, especially if your role or working environment changes.
Start with a brief. Continue with a conversation.
